[sticky post] Welcome to Space Swap!

space_swap is a multimedia exchange for space fandoms of all sorts, including television series, movies, and books. The only criterion for a fandom to be eligible is that it somehow be related to SPACE.

We'll be running this along typical exchange lines: participants will sign up with requests and offers, will be matched via AO3, and will receive an assignment. By signing up, participants agree to make a fannish creation for their assigned participant. In turn, someone will make a fannish creation for them.

We'll kick off the swap with a fandom recruitment phase in which everyone can wax poetic about their favourite space fandoms in the hopes of recruiting new fans. Following that we’ll hold nominations to get a set of fandoms and characters for our swap, and then we’ll have sign-ups and be off and running!

Nominations are Open!

Tags that do not conform to these instructions will not be approved.

Please disregard everything AO3 says on the "nominate" page. Do NOT choose the canonical versions of whatever tag you're nominating. Tags are NOT restricted to characters only. Thank you. (AO3 doesn't let mods adjust what's on the nominations page.) If you have questions, please ask!

Please check what was agreed for your fandom on the franchise wrangling post. Write the fandom's name based on what was decided there. If your fandom has not been discussed on the franchise wrangling post, use the AO3 canonical. Please avoid using "- All Media Types" tags. If you're nominating a character who's found in many canons, or a relationship with such a character, please add the fandom name in (brackets) after the name(s).

Nominating Characters
If you wish to receive a Thing centered on a character, nominate your character tag as Character: Character's Name. Some examples:
Character: Aria T'Loak
Character: Urdnot Wrex
Character: Miranda Lawson
Note: if you are nominating a RPG character whose gender one can choose (Shepard, The Jedi Exile, etc), please specify.

Nominating Relationships
If you wish to receive a Thing centered on a relationship between two or more characters, nominate your tag as Relationship: Character A/Character B if you want a romantic or sexual relationship between A and B, or as Relationship: Character A & Character B if you want a platonic or familial relationship between A and B. Alphabetize by surname. (Yes, it goes into the slot called "Characters". It's so that matching would work.) Some examples:
Relationship: Miranda Lawson & Oriana Lawson
Relationship: Urdnot Wrex/Garrus Vakarian
Relationship: Male Shepherd & Liara T'Soni

Nominating Worldbuilding
If you wish to receive a Thing centered on worldbuilding, nominate your tag as Worldbuilding: A Clear Description. Some examples:
Worldbuilding: Citadel Sewage System
Worldbuilding: Source of Cerberus' Funding
Worldbuilding: Mass Relays.

If you are unsure of what you want – say you'd like something with Ashley Williams exploring the Citadel sewage system. Would you be happier with Ashley Williams doing something completely different, or with someone else looking through the Citadel sewage system?
If you find these instructions confusing, or otherwise wish to flail, please comment here or PM one of the mods.

Rules discussion

Last year, we got people expressing the wish that Space Swap would match on relationships. Our expert in this field is mod Extra Penguin over on dreamwidth so here's what they had to say: 'Now, I mentioned my other project, , and a matching experiment there. Since incorporating character, relationship, and worldbuilding tags was successful there, we're asking the community: do you want this? The nominations instructions I wrote for CC are here and if you really want to see my pontifications and justifications on the system, well, that's here.'
The alternative: character-only AND matching, just like last year.

Is this a space exchange or a space fandoms exchange? That is: should Original Works be in as a fandom to nominate tags to? (Something akin to how does it?)

How many fanwork types? We'll have fanfic and fanart, and perhaps fanvid and podfic, but is there anything else you would like to request or make? How should multimedia stuff be counted?

And, to reiterate, we're 100% OK with RPF. (Nom it under Space Traveler RPF.) We're 100% OK with space vehicles. (Nom it under Space Vehicles.) We're 100% OK with "5-minute fandoms" like the NASA Mars Explorers Wanted posters or the NASA Visions of the Future posters or songs about how everybody everybody wants to be a astronaut or how there's a starman floating in the sky, or space-themed music videos, or short films, or, well anything. If there's space, it's a-OK.

Finale - Feedback Time

While the exchange was successful (everyone got a gift!), we'd still like to get input to make it even better next year. We-the-mods have discussed it amongst ourselves, and here's a list of things where we'd like your feedback, should you have any. Of course, we may have missed something, so feel free to tell us any other improvements you might want.
  • How was the writing time (8 weeks)? How about the other time intervals?
  • What did you enjoy? What did you think could be improved?
  • Any feedback on the (final) sign-up sheet?
  • How do you feel about DW vs LJ? (We had two LJ mods and one DW mod, and almost all the questions came in via DW. Is there a reason for this fundamental imbalance?)
  • Would a franchise wrangling post pre-nominations be good so that large megafranchises could be chopped up into sensible fandoms, rather than some subfandoms and then All Media Types? (*cough* Star Wars *cough*)
  • Should ExtraPenguin, long-term horse icon user, use a picture of the horsehead nebula as hir Space Mod icon, rather than the current picture of Earth?
Love, the mod team.

This post on DW.

Post-deadline pinch hits #3-6 are posted on DW here! They're due on the 24th at 18:00 GMT, please go have a look and comment if you're interested!

24hrs Remaining

The deadline is in 24 hours, at 18:00 GMT on the 21st of May. Some of you have already been granted extensions. If you feel like you, too, would need an extension, now is your final chance.

The Deadline Approaches

Works are due on the 21st – that's 4 days from now. The deadline is 6PM (18:00) GMT, at which time ExtraPenguin will default the incomplete assignments. Watch our DreamWidth for any pinch hits. If you have any questions, or need an extension, now is the time to contact the mod team.

Treats may be added to the collection at any time from now until reveals (28th).

Happy creating, Spacers!

Sign Up Update

collection | letters post | tag set

The collection is open! (Thanks, Morbane!) This time, you'll have ticky box options on requesting and offering different types of fanwork. I've also set the requests to be visible, so that people get to see who's requesting what, and alter their sign-up based on that information. People who signed up in the previous collection still have their prompts there, and can copy and paste to the new collection.

Current opinion leans toward pushing back all future deadlines by a week. Does anyone object?

Sign Up Issues

Hey guys, Space mods here.
It has recently been brought to our attention that we have missed off the option to offer or request certain types of fanworks on the sign up sheet.
To be honest, we did not realise this was something that had been done in the past and thanks to those who brought it to our attention.
Now this leaves us at an impasse, there are two choices and we wanted to open this to the group.
1 - We leave it as it is. You make whatever you can and accept whatever the other person can make
2 - We start the sign up period again with a new sign up sheet including the option to select fanworks.
What do you guys think?

Dear Spacer Letters

This is where you can post your Dear Spacer letter!

As we all know, it's not all that hard to exceed the space for prompts that AO3 gives us. Some of us (looks guiltily at self) also really like writing letters. And hey, who doesn't want to write a letter with the title Dear Spacer? Link your letter in the comments!

For consistent formatting, let's use this as the base of our comments:

AO3 name:
(Fandom 1): Character A, Character B
(Fandom 2): Character C
(Fandom 3): any
